Oracle Portal or Oracle WebCenter?

Oracle Portal is a mature product and with version 10.1.4 a powerful and productive tool for building web sites and web applications. However, Oracle portlets are generally developed to proprietary APIs – both because Oracle developers tend to choose Oracle’s own PL/SQL programming language, and because Oracle portal was born long before JSR-168 and other portlet standards.

To cater for developers looking for an Open Standards framework for building applications based on Java portlets, Oracle now additionally offers the WebCenter suite. This product supports all relevant and emerging standards – on the other hand, this is a new and as yet unproven product.

This presentation compares Oracle Portal with WebCenter suite, explains the differences in functionality and suggest evaluation criteria to use when deciding among them.
