Track: Strategy & Governance

Strategy behind simultaneous roll-out of 50 multi-language websites

Experiences from rollling out 53 country sites in 25 languages

Background
Alfa Laval is an international company that manufactures heat transfer, separation and fluid handling equipment. We have sales representation in over 100 countries around the world. Alfa Laval’s current website was implemented in 2001 – along with its new brand identity – when the company transitioned from private to public ownership.

Since then, two critical problems within the site’s basic structure have been identified: 1) The technical platform is literally crumbling, and 2) we are unable to satisfy requests for revision coming in from our prospects, customers, sales channels and employees. According to a study that was made in 2004, 70% of our readers could not find the information they were looking for – clearly an unacceptable statistic.

In an effort to address and correct these challenges, Alfa Laval started a project in April 2006 named Horizon. The objective for this project was to redesign the corporate site - along with its 53 regional sites in existence to serve their respective local markets. The emphasis for the project: Quality content in a new technical platform. The launch for the new site is scheduled for May 2008.

The management of our regional and local sites presents several challenges due to the fact that we are serving varied markets, industries, and applications with equally varied needs – along with the further challenge of differing local web resources and competence.

This presentation will focus on the challenges, successes and plan moving forward for the roll-out of the local websites, covering the following areas:

Content structure
One solution to combat certain challenges was the “content module concept” – developed in order to keep content consistent across the various local sites as well as to reduce error and increase quality of the content. Each content module is set up with a pre-defined set of criteria that have to be met prior to implementation, i.e. all sales companies might not be able to implement all the content modules. This presentation will cover the varied modules developed, the related criteria and how the content modules will be used in the implementation.

Web governance
The presentation will also map out how we revised our current publishing and approval process to place more responsibility (and accountability) on the local sales companies to manage their local content. This includes how we: keep content up-to-date; ensure sites are well maintained and managed; designate those responsible for local content, metadata, approvals and translations.

Roll-out strategy
This part of the presentation will cover in detail the simultaneous roll-out strategy for the 53 local sites. The key to a successful roll-out: Planning and preparation.
