Open University
The Open University (OU) is the United Kingdom's only university dedicated to distance learning.
We have around 150,000 undergraduate and more than 30,000 postgraduate students. 10,000 of our students have disabilities. 11,000 people are currently studying for OU Higher Degrees. Nearly all students are studying part-time. About 70 per cent of undergraduate students are in full-time employment. More than 50,000 students are sponsored by their employers for their studies
The Open University's style of teaching is called supported open learning. Open learning means that students will be learning in their own time by reading course material, working on course activities, writing assignments and perhaps working with other students. Supported means support from a tutor and the student services staff at Regional Centres.
The University itself is ranked among the top UK universities for the quality of its teaching.

Intranet 2.0: the Open University's journey towards a new generation intranet
This case study examines the OU's moves from its first iteration of a 'corporate' intranet, a homepage presiding over 200 seperate web sites, towards a more integrated 'business tool'.
Obejctives for the 'New Working Environment' project include leveraging the OU's investment in ECM, facilitation of collaborative working and the integration of 'Web 2.0' technologies into the intranet.
The project is currently in an 'interim' phase of incremental improvements based on blogs, wiki's. RSS and eRooms, and is currently investigating the benefits of portal sofware.
